Power-steering gear assembly continued

    Tighten end cover assembly with suitable tool.
    Tightening end-cover assembly with a suitable two-pin spanner.

    Fasten end cover assembly to gear housing by staking.
    End-cover assembly staked into gear-housing tube; staking depth of 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 in) shown.

    Set rack gear in neutral position.
    Rack assembled in gear housing with measurement length L marked at both tie-rod ends to set the rack to neutral position.

    Coat seal lip of oil seal with multi-purpose grease and install new pinion oil seal to pinion housing of gear housing with suitable tool.
    Make sure lip of oil seal faces up when installed.
    Suitable tool / drift pressing the new pinion oil seal into the pinion housing of the gear housing; arrow indicates direction (lip up).

    Install pinion bearing adjusting shim(s).
    Whenever pinion assembly, gear housing and rear housing are disassembled, replace shim(s) with new ones. Always use the same number of shim(s) when replacing.
