Disassembly and Assembly
The table below lists four ways to repair oil leaks in the steering gear, depending on the location of the leak. See the following figure for oil leak locations.
Oil-leak location → repair operation matrix
Operation
① Rear housing cover and rear housingReplacement: Rear oil seal; Pinion oil seal; O-ring; Snap ring
② Boot (LH)Replacement: Rack oil seal; Boot clamp
③ Boot (pinion side)Replacement: Rack oil seals; Rack oil seal; O-ring; Back-up collar; Boot clamp
④ Gear housing tubeReplacement: Gear housing tube; Copper washer
Procedure
① Rear housing cover and rear housingRemove gear from vehicle. Measure rack starting force and pinion rotating torque. Replace parts described above. Measure pinion rotating torque. Adjust adjusting screw. Measure rack starting force and pinion rotating torque.
② Boot (LH)(same flow) Replace rack oil seal.
③ Boot (pinion side)(same flow) Replace parts described above.
④ Gear housing tube(same flow) Replace gear housing tube.
Service parts to be prepared
① Rear housing cover and rear housingPinion seal kit
② Boot (LH)Gear housing seal kit
③ Boot (pinion side)Rack oil seal; Pinion seal kit
④ Gear housing tubeGear housing seal kit
All four repair flows share a common bench procedure: (1) Remove gear from vehicle → (2) measure rack starting force and pinion rotating torque → (3) replace the relevant parts → (4) measure pinion rotating torque → (5) adjust adjusting screw → (6) measure rack starting force and pinion rotating torque again.
